Take Out the Trash and Recycling

This is a simple yet helpful tip. An overflowing Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (MacOS) can affect the performance of your computer if it is running out of disk space. When was the last time you emptied it?Right-click (on Mac you can also control+click) on the recycle bin, or trash can, and click 'Empty' in the menu. Before you empty your trash, take a quick look through your bin in case there are any files you may have accidentally put in there. If you are not 100% sure you want to delete one of those files forever, you can still pull that file out. If you find one, select it and right-click to 'put back' or 'restore' to move the file back to the folder it was in when deleted.

How often should you empty your trash?

If your computer is running out of disk space, you should empty your recycle bin, or trash, regularly. Otherwise, it's really about staying organized. Empty it, and enjoy the feeling of satisfaction seeing the little icon empty again.Want to be reminded occasionally of recurring maintenance tasks like this one? Sign up today for the weekly Edwin email.
